The ban on homosexuals donating blood is officall over. But not really.

The goverment in the UK has decided that it is now ok for gay men to donate blood.
However, they can only do this if they haven't had sex for over a decade.
This new proposal does not mean much for the ones who need the blood.
There is indeed a rare blood shortage and even if a homosexual men, who has only ever had safe sex in his life can save another persons life with his blood, it is denied. The reasons for this is that he NHS does not trust the sexual history of gay men. If you're a straight men and you have sex with a prositute, you can donate blood a year later.

I have heard about this ban before, and I always thought it was ridicilous. To donate blood, the only thing that should be important should be if the blood is clean. Your sexuality does not determine how trustworthy you are, or if you're blood is clean or not. I find these new rules rather absurd. A homosexual man cannot have sex for ten years, but a hetrosexual man can have sex with a prostitute and donate blood a year later. I thought the law didn't discriminate on sexuality, but apparently it still does. Truly considering the fact that people need the blood, that they might be dying without it, is bad.

  1. Again, I agree with your opinion :). Anyone could have a scary or nasty disease in his/her blood, so that is why they always check the blood before they put it in someone else's body. So I don't really understand why blood from a homosexual person is not acceptable, because blood will be checked from any person that they receive the blood from.

  2. Well put, I haven't heard of the subject before, and I am shocked to read this. I cannot believe that this unjustice still occurs in a modern, cultivated society. If there were reasons based on scientific evidence, I might understand. However this matter is treated as if we lived thousand years ago.
