Sex offenders and really short jail sentences.

One in six sex offenders serves a shockinly short time. Less then 12 months that is!
Sixty percent of all sex offenders serve under three years of time in Jail.
Even though last year alone, there were 500 sex offenders send to jail.
Hopefull this informations will put pressure on Justice Secretary Ken Clarke to give violent criminals only half the time they would have to serve, if they plea guilty early.

Anger from the public already forced David Cameron to get rid of the '50 %' discount rule on rapist, but not yet on other criminals.
Yet more then half of all the convicts charged with violents offences go free after less then a year.

It is clear, England wants tougher rules against crime, as promised by there goverment.

Reaction:
I do not think that by putting people in jail, mental diseases and anger issues will be solved. I think they can get worse after a while. I do agree on thougher punishments, but I do not agree with the method. I also found it shocking that so many get out after just a year.
Since I am sure most victims would need more time then a year to mend the psychical impact of the assault.
Besides, the idea of giving criminals a 50 % charge on the time they have to serve if they plea guilty early is a bit ridiculious. You shouldn't have to bribe them. They should confess and if they don't then they should be send to court.
I agree on harsher punishment and with lack of better ways to punish them, serving time might be the only way to go in this case.

If you're gay you can be a bishop! But only if you're celibate.

It has emerged that celibate gay men in civil partnerships could become Church of England bishops.

In advice of the equality act, it came into full force that gay celibate men in civil partnerships can become the bishop of england!
It provides a hands up to those gay bishops who are open about it.
This legalisation means that employers cannot discriminate against sexuality anymore.

However the Church can still take you off the list for next Bishop if they find out that you are not celibate.
Exclusion based on your sexual activity by the Church can now be required if you're openly gay.

Reaction:
How good it is that gay men can be bishop now! Yet on the one hand, U don't understand how gay men could want to be a part of something that seemingly does not like them at all ( even though the bible says nothing about hating homosexuality instead it is about loving your neighbour).
I do think it is a great step forward and I hope another step will soon be taken too.
That gay men that do have sex can also become Archbishop if they want to.
Sex should not make a difference in the fact that someone would be able to make a good Archbishop or not.
They're not going to do it in front of everybody in a church, so I do not see the problem.

18 million people cannot afford a summer holiday.

18 million Britons are struggeling so much with money, that they cannot afford to go on a summer holiday this year.
Nearly four in ten families has had so much trouble with the recession, that they can no longer afford to go on vacation.

The British resorts will also be hit hard because of the recession. Of those questioned, 39 percent said they will stay at home this summer.

Of those who are not going away at all and staying home, 90 percent answered that they would have gone on vacation in Britain.

The people that are able to pay for a vacation, answered that they would not use credit cards, but save up for it instead.

A combination of high influation, and no to low wage rising is also the reason so many people are dealing with money troubles.

Reaction:
Well that is not really nice. So much inflation and so little wage rise could cause a lot of problems on the long run. I wonder why a lot of Britons didn't think of this before, since the number have only risen slightly.
Four years ago 31 percent was not able to go on vacation, now it is 36 percent.
My opinion about this is that if you cannot pay for something, that is not a life neccesity, then you don't need to have it no matter what.
If they truly want to go on vacation, they could save up several years and go once in a while.
You cannot spend money that you don't have, so these people need to stop complaining.
How bad not going away might seem, at least they have free time to relax after a year of hard work and that should also be worth something.

Skyrocketed prices of hay and straw!

There is not a lot hay and straw left, since last winter.
It was cold and most animals were kept inside and eat alot.
However, there are more troubles for Horse owners, livestock farmers and even zoos to be found!
The price of hay and straw has skyrocketed!

This year in early spring it did not rain enough for the hay meadows to grow lush, which resulted in less to no hay.

And already hay bales that would be normally sould for five pounds, can now be sold for 6 or even ten pounds.

The straw crops are coping with the same problem of the drought, which will eventually also result in a shortage of it.

Another reason there is not enough straw is because Farmers put it back in the ground.
This way the ground stays fertile without using fertiliser, Which has also skyrocket in price.

Reaction:
It still is a bit weird that a little change in the weather has this much effect. No rain in spring and BOOM, the prices of several products just go up.
I think it is sad for the farmers that there is no hay and straw, but it is even more sad for the animals of which this is there food. That is not nice to put animals on a diet!
But honestly, I still think there should be a way to balance out how such a small thing could have such a big influence on something that, I didn't even know about.

But I don't know what that is yet.

Over 100's of free schools to open in Britain.

More then hundreds of new 'free' schools have to open in Britain next year to boost the Coalition's big Society programme.

Around 281 applications have been made in the last three months in order to establish a lot of 'free' schools.
These schools are goverment funded, but are run indepened from city councils.

In most cases, these applicants are attempting to get a place in a 'free' school because there parents cannot afford a private education, or there is no place in the local schools or to adress 'historic academic failure'.

At a conference today in London, Mr Gove will point to the extremely promising reactions to the free schools.
He will also point out that the reform is working quit well and will use the number of new aplications to prove this fact.

Reaction:
First of all, I think education is very, very important. But, I could get little to no information about how this school is going to be run. What I got from this article is that it will run on goverment money, but without the control of the local city council. The most forces behind these free schools will be then; parents, charities and volunteers.
How nice and probably better then I imagine it right now, this idea might be, I am not sure if it will work.

If they go one with these plants, I atleast hope they have some sort of external council that will keep an eye on things.

Six year old boy killed by hit and run driver.

Owen, a six year old boy has been killed in a hit and run accident.
The driver, who apperantly 'mowed' aover the young boys body and killed him, has been hunted down in a  police search.

His dad hold him in his arms while crying that Owen shouldn't leave this world, and that Owen is is his little soldier.

The boy was hit when he and a friend crossed the road.
Owen died on fathers day.

Reaction;
I do not really agree with killing someone and then running away, not to say I agree with killing in the first place.
But running over a boy and then to drive on seems really cruel. I will never understand why anybody would do such a thing. Besides that, I do think that this article does not focus enough on the boys own responsibility.
Sure, he was only six, but if you're old enough to play on your own out of the sight of your parents, you should be responsible enough to look both ways before crossing. If he was not responsible enough to do this then his parents should have watched him better.
Not everything should be blamed on the driver, how cruel his behaviour has been. Everybody also carries there own responsibility.

We intend to keep all our stars.

Harry Redknapp says he has no intentions of selling any of his stars.
He says that he has seen it happen! When the Tottenham sold one star to another club, they just all seemed to go.

This should be considered as a warning to the world of football. Selling your best players is not good for your club or image; says Harry Redknapp.

Other clubs try to improve there quality all the time, but the spurs just seem to try and get ridd of it! That is not the way it should work, there should be more quality added to the squat.

Harry redknapp also said that they wanted to get back in the champions league, and definatly needed there newes and quality addition Luka to do so.

Reaction;
I myself am not surely at home in the world of football, but I have never quit understood the concept of selling good players.
I understand that there are large amounts of money going on in this specific part of the sport worlds, but as a club I would always think that your main objective would be to win the game, the leauge and all the other competitions that there are.

I might be a bit naive, but I think that what Harry Redknapp is doing is not very bad indeed.
If you've a good team you have more change to win!

Being a teacher is the most stressful profession.

Being a teacher is the most stressful profession.

Being a teacher is a very stressful profession.
Teachers make long hours, and work up to sometimes 50 hours a week.
Most teachers have a member of their team that has commited suicide, or at least tried to.
With the bureacracy, the loans that are minimal and the stress, teaching does not seem to be a very atractive job. Therefor the Union has passed two resolutions to decreas all this presure; First, the union must support victims of work stress. Secondly, the Health and Sefety Executive should intervine in shools were employees do not carry out certain assesments of the risk of stress.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2011/apr/25/stress-drives-teachers-out-of-schools

Reaction

I know that teachers had it bad, but this is just  sad. Since teaching jobs are so bad, no one will want to become a teacher and therefor risking the future of a society build on knoweledge.
I hope the resolutions will help teachers a bit, but I do not think they will be very effective.
Maybe if we retreat the troops that are having a war now somewhere in the world, use that money to better the education and give teachers a higher salary, teaching will become an atractive profession and more people will want to become a teacher. And thus making it easier for the teachers.

Emma Watson is transferring from Brown University.

Emma Watson is transferring from Brown University.
Emma Watson, who is a famous actress  and celebrity, starring in Harry Potter, has confirmed she is transferring from Brown to another University.
Emma Watson was studying  European Women's history and drama, but will now pursue a course not offered at Brown. There were rumours that Emma Watson was bullied during her stay at Brown, but her representive, Vanessa Davies denies this. But according to a source, she was indeed bullied. Whenever Emma answered to something during a lecture there would be peers shouting. The most common was 'Ten points for griffindor.' Emma Watson who had spoken out her concerns about not fitting in in 2009 I was afraid they’d think, “You’re famous. You’re given free handbags. Why should you deserve to be normal?'

Comment.
I have to admit that I have always admired Emma Watson. She started very young as an actress, and was not consious of the amount of money she had untill she was seventeen. Yet she is still pursueing a univeristy degree at an ivy league school. I don't like the idea of bullying at all. So if these rumours are true, then that makes those kids a bit pahtic. Probably just jelouse, but still not nice of them at all. I hope Emma Watson can continue her degree at another University and finish it without pressure of bullies.

The Arts in England lose goverment funding.

The Arts in England lose goverment funding.
the arts in England lost goverment funding.
The budget of the arts has been cut, making sure the goverment saved up to £100 million. This also has a negative side, because not only does the goverment now saves a lot of money, most of the arts has completely lost their funding.
Last year 849 organisations were able to get funding from the goverment. This year, it is only 695 organisations who were able to get funded by the goverment. The groups that completely rely on the goverment for funding is high, so this could mean that there will be a decrease in the Arts in the UK. Unless the organisations are able to provide a alternative source of funding, such as: private sponsorship, lottery tickets, or being able to do it completely on selling tickets alone.

Comment.
I find it sad that whenever a Goverment has to cut in it's budget it choses things like this. The arts. I understand that art is not a basic neccesity such as, educaton and health service. However, I do believe that a budget can be fixed more flexible then just removing funding for one group. I do not know what happend to the other groups that get goverment funding. So I cannot give my fair opinion about this, because I do not know everything. However, cutting in the arts is getting old and I wish they had the money to leave it alone.

Bad behaviour, and now what ?

A rise in bullying among young girls.

Teachers are worried about the rise in bullying among young girls.
Incidents include bullying on social network sites such as facebook and msn, but also consist out of gang violence. The girls that participate in this kind of behaviour are often expelled.
Today in Liverpool, the members of the Association of Teachers and lecturers are to debate the exclusion of these girls from school.
The motion, who is coming from teachers at schools in Derby and Chesterfields, declares it wants a better co-ordination to help the girls who are sent home from school. Besides this it wants more support for the teacherse and heads in dealing with them.

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/education/article2989599.ece

Reaction

It is always good to try and make education better, but in this motion I hardly see something that can make it better. The teachers should not help the girls who are expelled, they should try to find out why they get expelled in the first place. Maybe these girls have a rough background and could have a lot of profit from some councelling. Instead of dealing with the consequenses, I think the teachers and heads should focus on dealing with the root of the problems. The reasons why these young girls turn to gang violence and cyber bullying in the first place.

Green protesters asked to lodge appeal.

Green protesters asked to lodge appeal.

Mark Kennedy, the undercover agent.

Twenty protesterers were arested a few hours before a big protest at a Soar power station. They were all found guilty of trespassing near Britains, almost, largest coal-fired power station. A secret informant, Mark Kennedy, had informant the police of this.
Today they have been asked to lodge appeal as soon as possible, because the police withheld secret recorded tapes. Mark Kennedy, the secret informant, is also the man who told the prostesters to lodge appeal,     since the CPS itself does not have to power to have the case reviewed. Mark Kennedy has quit the Metropolian Police and has fled to America after he admitted he engaged in sexual relationships with two female activists.

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/uk/crime/article2990307.ece

Reaction.

Mark Kennedy was undercover for seven years, posing as a dropout green activist. He also had sex with some of the female activist in the group. I can understand that after such a long time of 'posing' as a green activist, you get used to the people you hang around. Even start feeling sympathy for them, hence the sexual relation he had with two of them. I don't find it strange that Mark Kennedy pointed them towards their rights, still a bit sad that because of this, he might have lost his career.

The ban on homosexuals donating blood is officall over. But not really.

The goverment in the UK has decided that it is now ok for gay men to donate blood.
However, they can only do this if they haven't had sex for over a decade.
This new proposal does not mean much for the ones who need the blood.
There is indeed a rare blood shortage and even if a homosexual men, who has only ever had safe sex in his life can save another persons life with his blood, it is denied. The reasons for this is that he NHS does not trust the sexual history of gay men. If you're a straight men and you have sex with a prositute, you can donate blood a year later.

comment

I have heard about this ban before, and I always thought it was ridicilous. To donate blood, the only thing that should be important should be if the blood is clean. Your sexuality does not determine how trustworthy you are, or if you're blood is clean or not. I find these new rules rather absurd. A homosexual man cannot have sex for ten years, but a hetrosexual man can have sex with a prostitute and donate blood a year later. I thought the law didn't discriminate on sexuality, but apparently it still does. Truly considering the fact that people need the blood, that they might be dying without it, is bad.

Electricity link between the UK and the Netherlands.

Electricity.

Today, 12 May 2011, the UK and the Netherlands are officially linked together by a super power grid.
The link that runs under the Nort Sea is 260 km long and contains 23,000 tonnes of copper and lead.
After 25 years, the UK has now an electricity link to another country!
New inventions, such as the High Voltage DC ( HVDC) made this possible. Before these new cables, energy could only be transmitted for about 80 kilometers.
This new project will make it easier in the future to exchange renewable energy, from Germany to Scandinavia. If the UK does not get by on windpower alone, they can now easily import. But if they have a surpluss they can easily export.

Comment
I was not aware that they were building a massive line under the sea towards the UK to exchange power.
However I do think that it is a good idea. The UK cannot run on windpower alone, since the windpower is not a reliable source of energy. However, if there is the oppertunity to import energy when the windpower is not available, that would make it easier to use more green energy. I think it is very important that we start using more green energy. Most of the times, green energy is already around us, such as the wind and the sun, and even power from water. I would say it is a waste if we wouldn't use it and instead keep using old fashioned methods to produce energy.
